Public Education
Committee Chair: Rob Williams
South Atlantic Representative: Wes Cox
The Board of Directors meeting was held in Dana Point, California on November 3, 4, and 5, 2005. The meeting was hosted by the South West Region.
Our national budget is $5,000. The majority of the budget will be used to make a safety video. Public Education predicts the video will cost about $3,500 to complete. The video will contain surf safety, flat water safety, junior guard information and USLA information. Eighty percent of the video will be on surf safety while twenty percent will be on flat water safety. The video will be appropriate for children third grade and up. Public Education would like to use video footage from all chapters. If you have any footage that you think might be to value please contact Wes Cox.
There is lots of Public Education material to download off the USLA website. Click on the Safety and Public Education links.
The remaining money from the video will be used on small giveaways. The giveaways we discussed were wristbands and key chains with safety tips on them.
We discussed the importance of each chapter getting out in the community and schools promoting water safety mainly around the spring before the waters warm up. It is best to use the CD we made last year and also the information you can download from the USLA website.
As the Horry County, Myrtle Beach Chapter, I am working on getting funds from the tourism board to have table tops with beach safety information on them to put in hotel rooms. I also have plans to get safety tips put in the elevators of the resorts.
